Umm Qarn
Umm Qarn was
established in Qatar in 1988 by HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Special Advisor to
the Emir of Qatar. The idea was motivated by His Highness' love of
horses and equestrian sports and the desire to impart the same to his
children and the younger generation.
Since
then the stud farm has been a continuous state of
development and improvement striving to achieve its
objectives of breeding and racing the finest Arabian
horses. His Highness envisaged that by carefully
acquiring some of the finest Arabian racing lines from
all over the world and by taking care to breed only from
sound horses with good conformation, Umm Qarn would have
a home breeding programme that would yield great success
in future years. The vision and planning of His
Highness has already achieved outstanding wins in most
of the top Arabian races throughout the world.
During
the foundation years of the stud, Umm Qarn took part in
endurance, showing and also thoroughbred racing.
The Qatar International Desert Marathon was held
annually from 1994 until 1997 and was won by Umm Qarn on
three occasions, no small achievement since there was
strong competition from riders and horses from Europe,
USA and the Middle East. Umm Qarn also won many
International Show prizes and owned the well known
thoroughbred Midnight Legend in UK and won top races at
Royal Ascot and Goodwood.
The farm
in Qatar is situated in a natural oasis and provides
state of the art facilities for the training of
racehorses. In addition to superb air-conditioned
stabling and many grass and sand paddocks, there are two
fine training tracks on the spacious 580 hectare estate.
Other top of the range facilities include an equine
swimming pool., solarium, treadmill and a covered
15-horse walker with a centre lunging area. The
farm has its own veterinary laboratory with which to
monitor the health of the horses, an advanced treatment
room and a fully equipped room for the farriers.
Umm Qarn stand several very successful racing stallions at
stud, many by artificial insemination, to allow the use
of Umm Qarn stallions worldwide.
