The Artificial Insemination Unit at Umm Qarn’s UK farm has excellent facilities for the collection analysis and storage of stallion semen.

As the unit is frequently under quarantined conditions it is has all the facilities required to keep the stallions happy while they are in quarantine. It is housed in a large barn where there are four large stallion boxes next to a covered paddock for daily turnout.

Housed in this building is the covering yard with ‘dummy mare’ and a fully equipped laboratory.

All the stallions are trained to mount the ‘dummy mare’ for collection of semen. The resulting collection is then removed to the laboratory next door for analysis.

Once collected, the semen is processed and analysed to ensure that it is of excellent quality prior to either shipping as chilled semen or before being frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen in Umm Qarn’s specialist freezers.

Whether it frozen or chilled, a sample is retained for re-testing to ensure that the client is receiving only the highest quality semen.

All details relevant to the collection such as, straw and tip colours, biological data, quarantine specification and freezer location are then entered into Umm Qarn’s custom-written database. This makes finding appropriate collections for worldwide shipping accurate and efficient and ensures that any one time the farm knows exactly how much semen stock is available for each stallion.
