Umm Qarn Farm was established in 1988 by
HH Sh. Abdullah Bin Khalifah Al Thani, Prime Minister of the State of
Qatar.
During the foundation
years the stud, Umm Qarn took part in endurance, showing and also
thoroughbred racing.
The Qatar Desert
Marathon was held between 1994 and 1997 and was won by Umm Qarn Farm on
three of the four years that it was held; no mean feat against a strong
International field of competitors. It was during that period that Umm
Qarn also had success in the showing arena with horses
such as Minnerva,
Bespechny, Kartell and Sword of the Sky whilst in thoroughbred racing
Umm Qarn’s Midnight Legend (1991 Night Shift x Myth) won some top races
including King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot.
With the setting up
in 1993 of the UK farm for breeding, Umm Qarn Farm started to
concentrate on breeding and racing Arabians.
Umm Qarn foundation
stallions Sambist and Samsheik had raced with great success in Russia
and USA respectively and both went on to win for Umm Qarn Farm before
they retired to stud in UK. Pastor and Top Flyte had their first
foals in 1994 (winners Ibn Al Ajwaad and Al Zahi) and 1995 (winners
Farra and Desert Dancers) respectively. Samsheik had previously produced
foals in 1993 and 93 in USA, and his first foal for Umm Qarn Farm was
multiple winner Adwan in 1994.
The purchase of Djebbel, Makzan and
Djelmila from France as racehorses started the beginning of the major racing successes
for Umm Qarn Farm.
1995
With over 30 winners
in 1995 with horses such as Sarki D’Espiens, Silver Sunrise and CR
Overdrive in Qatar and Marja, Barabinsk and CR Top Banana in UK, one of
Umm Qarn’s rising stars of this year was Makzan who won five races in

the first Umm Qarn homebred, Al Hanoof, won her first race, the first of
her five wins that year including Hobbs Melville Sprint(Group 1) in Denmark and
Zaabeel International Stakes(Group 1) in UK . It was confirmation
that Umm Qarn could not only select and buy winners, but breed them
also. Djebbel had three wins that year including the retention of Prix
Du President UAE in Chantilly and Dubai International Stakes in UK.

three Group 1 races; Zabeel International Stakes and Al Nahyan
